The Prosecutors' College of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) appointed Vanya Stefanova as acting Prosecutor General in place of Borislav Sarafov. The decision was made unanimously and without debate. It can be appealed within 14 days.
Until now, Vanya Stefanova held the position of Deputy Prosecutor General, having been appointed at the proposal of Borislav Sarafov.
Today, after Borislav Sarafov withdrew from the position of acting Prosecutor General, the college sent a letter to Stefanova, requesting her consent to temporarily assume the position for a period of six months. The reason is that she is the most senior prosecutor in the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office; the other Deputy Prosecutor General, Magdalena Lazarova, is next in line. At the end of today's meeting of the college, Stefanova's consent was received.
Vanya Stefanova was an investigator in the Sofia Regional Investigation Service from 03.06.1997 to 25.06.2001. After that, she was a prosecutor in the District Prosecutor's Office – Slivnitsa and deputy of the administrative head - deputy district prosecutor of the District Prosecutor's Office – Slivnitsa. From April 2010, she was a prosecutor in the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office. Subsequently, in the period from 13.09.2013 to 04.03.2015, she was the deputy chairman of the State Agency „National Security“. Then Stefanova returned to the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, and from 2019 she has been a prosecutor in the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office. In January 2025, she was elected as Deputy Prosecutor General by the Prosecutors' College of the SJC.
