The first large-scale scientific mapping of cetaceans in the Black Sea waters was carried out in June 2025 by experts from Green Balkans. The multidisciplinary research team applied innovative field survey methodologies, including ship surveys and modern photo-documentary techniques.

The expedition results revealed an exceptionally rich biological diversity. Specialists identified several dolphin species - specifically Delphinus delphinus and Tursiops truncatus, as well as extremely rare specimens of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

The official report, recently published, confirms over 30 documented cases of dolphin populations and 2-3 potential encounters with humpback whales. These scientific data represent the first categorical evidence of cetacean seasonal migration routes in the region.

The study was funded through the LIFE European program, with its main goal being the creation of a comprehensive information base for marine fauna conservation. The methodology included precise monitoring with the participation of leading naturalists and modern tracking technologies.

Green Balkans announced its plans to continue the study in 2026-2027, which include expanding research routes and introducing additional sound monitoring. The final results will be presented to state institutions and included in European marine mammal observation platforms.
