Ukraine is seeking alternatives to complete the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant, avoiding the use of Russian-made equipment offered by Bulgaria. This became clear from a statement by Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk during a briefing, cited by the Ukrinform agency.
Tension is felt in the air as reporters ask questions, trying to understand the future of the project. The minister, focused, makes it clear that the situation is complex.
"We are considering different options. I would not like to dwell only on the Bulgarian blocks. If that doesn't work out, we need to consider other options and we are currently developing them", said Grynchuk.
The minister emphasized that Ukraine has the resources and the potential to develop its nuclear energy. Her words reflect determination, despite the uncertainty surrounding the specific plans.
We remind that on February 11, 2025, the Verkhovna Rada decided to approve the purchase of Russian-made equipment from Bulgaria, with the aim of completing two power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. However, in order to start the actual construction, it is necessary to pass a separate law by the parliament.
The atmosphere is filled with anticipation as everyone awaits the next steps.
In April, Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov unexpectedly announced that the country would not sell Ukraine the two reactors from the unfinished Belene NPP. These reactors were supposed to be used for the project in Khmelnytskyi. However, in June, German Galushchenko, then Ukrainian energy minister, indicated that Bulgaria had not officially rejected the possibility of selling the Russian equipment in question.
