Ukraine marks 4 years since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, representing the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.
The Presidents of the European Council, António Costa, and the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will attend a commemorative ceremony in Kyiv and will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A video conference of the "Coalition of the Willing" is also planned.
Despite intensive diplomatic efforts over the past year, including several rounds of negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, supported by the United States, the two sides remain far from reaching a peace agreement.
According to Kyrylo Budanov, head of President Zelenskyy's office, new negotiations could take place as early as the end of this week. Russian strikes on energy infrastructure have made this winter the harshest since the beginning of the conflict.
On the battlefield, Russia has not yet managed to establish full control over Donbas. The fate of the region remains a key issue in the negotiations, due to Moscow's insistence that Kyiv cede the territories it still controls.
