A modern research group has managed to identify 230 newly discovered giant viruses in the ocean environment through advanced computer algorithms and genetic analysis of marine samples. These viruses, called "giruses", are distinguished by unexpected size and genetic capacity, making them different from those known so far.
Particular attention is paid to the potential impact of these viruses on photosynthetic organisms, such as algae and microscopic amoebas, which are a key element of the marine ecosystem. Some of the new viruses may alter photosynthesis and carbon exchange in the oceans.
