Bulgarian success on a global level

Bulgaria has achieved another major success in the natural sciences. At the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held in Vilnius, Lithuania, the Bulgarian national team won four awards – two silver and two bronze medals.

The four medals are proof of the high level of preparation of the Bulgarian students in competition with 312 contestants from 82 countries.

The participants went through extremely difficult practical and theoretical exams, covering fields such as molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and bioinformatics. The team leaders are some of the leading specialists from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" – Prof. Dr. Albena Yordanova, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Iliyana Sazdova, and PhD student Teodor Trifonov.

Bulgaria is one of the founding countries of the Olympiad in 1990 and continues to be among the strongest nations in the prestigious competition, successfully competing with countries such as Germany, Great Britain, and China.
