One of Donald Trump's most influential advisors, Stephen Miller, said that Greenland should become part of the US in order to protect NATO and the Arctic.
In an interview with CNN, when asked whether the US would rule out the use of force to annex the semi-autonomous region of Denmark, a NATO member, Miller said: "No one will fight the US for the future of Greenland."
On Sunday, Trump reiterated his insistence that the US 'needs' Greenland - to the dismay of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who said that an attack by the US would mean the end of NATO.
Six European allies joined the support for Denmark with a joint statement on Tuesday.
