The eurozone's goods trade surplus with the rest of the world reached 14.2 billion euro in July 2026. This is an increase compared to 10.7 billion euro for the same month last year and compared to 7.2 billion euro in June. The improvement is mainly driven by the chemical products, food, and beverage sectors, as well as other industrial goods, while the surplus in machinery and transport narrowed. Within the eurozone, trade grew by 5%, reaching 1654 billion euro.
For the period from January to July, the eurozone's trade surplus settled at 17 billion euro, which is significantly lower than the 92.8 billion euro recorded during the same period in 2025. During these seven months, eurozone exports grew by 1.2% to 1763.6 billion euro, while imports increased by 5.8% to 1746.6 billion euro.
Preliminary Eurostat estimates published today show an 8 billion euro surplus in the European Union's goods trade with the rest of the world in July 2026. This is a decrease from 9.8 billion euro for the same month last year. However, compared to June, when the positive balance was 2.4 billion euro, the EU's trade surplus increased. Non-seasonally adjusted data for July show that EU exports grew by 7.8% year-on-year to 247.1 billion euro, while imports increased by 9% to 239.1 billion euro.
The annual decline in the EU surplus is mainly due to a smaller balance in machinery and transport. This was partially offset by higher surpluses in chemical products, food, and beverages, as well as a reduction in the deficit for other industrial goods. For the January-July period, the EU reported a trade deficit of 13.8 billion euro, compared to a surplus of 84 billion euro a year earlier. During these seven months, exports decreased by 0.6% to 1565.1 billion euro, while imports grew by 5.9% to 1578.9 billion euro. Intra-EU trade increased by 6.1% to 2581.6 billion euro.
Eurozone exports in July grew by 9% year-on-year to 276 billion euro, while imports increased by 7.9% to 261.8 billion euro.
