Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Uyanık announced that the Turkish side is beginning an investigation into the incident with the tanker “Kairos” near Ahtopol, which was carried out by a private Turkish company without prior notification to the Turkish state. The ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the distressed ship.
The Ministers of Transport and Foreign Affairs have requested detailed information about what happened before the tanker reached Bulgarian territorial waters. The questions include the circumstances that led to the situation and why the tanker was towed to Bulgaria.
The ambassador assured that Turkey will provide full information to the Bulgarian authorities. The crew was evacuated, and the nationalities of the sailors have been identified. The issue of technical actions, including the preparation of equipment for the ship, is also being discussed.
According to information from the Minister of Transport, the ship does not pose a danger, but inspections and questions are expected. It is indicated that the organization and expenses are the responsibility of the shipowner.
Three specific questions to the Turkish side are also being discussed, related to the movement of the tanker, the task of the tug TIMUR BEY, and whether the tanker was deliberately abandoned in Bulgarian waters.
