Successful start for young Japanologists in Burgas

Students from the first intake of the bachelor's program "Foreign Language Teaching Methodology – Japanese Language" at the Burgas Branch of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" had a special meeting with H.E. Chikahisa Sumi, Ambassador of Japan to Bulgaria.

During his visit, the diplomat applauded the students' efforts and their remarkable language progress after only the first year of study.

Academic development and future prospects

The program, which started in the 2025/2026 academic year, is implemented by the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology and is already establishing its place in the academic life of Burgas. In 2026, the Branch is set to welcome a second intake.

Interest in Japanese culture

Ambassador Sumi's visit also included the opening of a public lecture titled "Why is Japanese cinema like no other?", delivered by Dr. Lyudmila Kirilova. The full hall proved that the interest in Japanese language and culture in the region is growing rapidly, finding its stable university foundation.
