The International Cycling Union (UCI) took unprecedented disciplinary actions against the leadership of the Bulgarian Cycling Federation, imposing a two-year ban on Evgeni Gerganov and Danail Angelov.
An independent investigation by the ethics commission revealed systemic violations, including manipulation of sports competitions, verbal harassment, and abuse of power. The official UCI statement points to specific evidence of improper actions.
According to the investigation, Danail Angelov committed the most serious violations – falsifying start lists, improperly benefiting certain athletes, and compromising the sporting spirit.
Evgeni Gerganov, a former professional cyclist, is accused of complicity and concealing violations. He did not take the necessary actions to prevent unethical behavior among the federation's leadership.
The imposed sanctions deprive the two functionaries of the opportunity to hold leadership positions or participate in organizing any cycling events for two full seasons.
The decision can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with UCI categorically defending the principles of integrity and professionalism in international cycling.
