Russia attacked Ukraine with 310 strike drones overnight on 3-4 November. It also hit the Odesa region during the day, wounding two people. Ukraine's Air Force says 272 drones were shot down or jammed by 08:00, and more than 20 others were still in the air.

The death toll from the Russian air strike on Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region on 2 November has risen to 37. Russia has waged a full-scale war on Ukraine since February 2022.

Overnight attack: 310 drones

The drones included Shaheds (81 of them jet-powered), Gerberas and Parodiya decoys. Aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare teams, unmanned systems and mobile fire groups worked against them.

Ukraine shot down or jammed 64 jet-powered Shaheds. Enemy weapons hit 19 places, and debris from downed drones fell on 15.

Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region

The strike on Komyshuvakha has killed 37 people, including two rescuers and four police officers. On 2 November Russian aircraft hit the village several times. One strike hit a school where aid was handed out every week to the residents who remained.

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional administration, says a FAB-3000 bomb fell right on the people who had come for humanitarian aid. In the morning rescuers pulled 31 bodies from the rubble. Twelve had been identified, and 59 people were listed as missing. Early estimates said up to 38 more people could be under the debris. Most of the victims are civilians who came for aid, or who rushed to help after the first strike.

The National Police released video from the body camera of a police officer who died. It shows the last minutes before the second strike. People who had been helping after the first attack tried to take cover in a shelter. A three-tonne bomb and several more hits buried dozens under the rubble. Russia again claims it struck Ukrainian troops. Police call that a lie.

Odesa region

Russian forces shelled the Odesa region during the day on 4 November, and two people were wounded. The State Emergency Service said a warehouse full of shoes collapsed at one address, a fire broke out and two cars were destroyed.

At another site, a postal terminal was damaged in a hit, and a lorry caught fire after the strike.

Shepetivka, Khmelnytskyi region

A mobile fire group of the Shepetivka anti-aircraft missile brigade shot down a jet-powered Shahed in the Khmelnytskyi region with a ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft gun. The crew spotted the target and received data on its course, azimuth and altitude. The drone was about a kilometre from the position, at a height of nearly 1,300 metres.

Gunner Oleksandr caught the target in the thermal sight, and the crew opened barrage fire. "We spotted the target, got data on its movement and opened barrage fire. When we finished, we saw a flash in the sky," said Anatoliy, the group's senior officer. In early October the same group hit a jet-powered Geran drone, also with a ZU-23-2 and despite bad weather.

What air defence shot down in October

In October Ukraine's defence forces neutralised more than 8,000 Russian drones and missiles. They include 14 Kh-101 cruise missiles, 11 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, 12 Kalibr missiles, 7 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles, 8 Iskander-K missiles and one Zircon anti-ship missile. Forces also downed 143 S8000 Banderol missiles, 4,455 Shahed-131/136 strike drones, Gerberas and Parodiya decoys, 2,688 Shahed-238s, 1,104 reconnaissance drones and 809 Lancets.

More than 43,000 tactical-level drones were also destroyed. Russian units regularly changed flight routes and heights, mixed strike drones with decoys and launched mass missile strikes. Ballistic missiles remain the most dangerous. Russia uses them to hit civilian infrastructure, so Ukrainian air defence needs more resources to intercept them.
