Russia attacked Ukraine with 149 attack drones overnight into Friday, 16 October, wounding people in the Volyn, Rivne, Cherkasy, Odesa and Sumy regions, Ukrainian officials said. At least 21 people were wounded in all. In Volyn region, five more people are missing. Russia has been waging a full-scale war on Ukraine since February 2022.
Overview of the attack
The drones flew from the direction of Oryol in Russia, from occupied Donetsk and from Gvardeyskoye in occupied Crimea, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Of the 149 drones, 108 were jet-powered.
Preliminary data show that by 09:30 air defences had shot down or jammed 114 drones, 77 of them jet-powered. Even so, 27 drones hit 24 places, and debris fell on 14 more.
Kyiv
Russian forces hit a residential area of Kyiv on Thursday evening, the State Emergency Service said. In the Shevchenkivskyi district an outbuilding and a private house caught fire, and the blaze spread over 190 sq m.
Later in the night a building in the Solomianskyi district was also hit and caught fire. The reports mention no injured people.
Volyn region
Volyn region came under constant attack from jet-powered drones, regional administration head Roman Romaniuk wrote on social media. About 20 targets in the region were in the drones' sights, and by 08:00 some 370,000 customers had no power. Repairs are continuing.
A company with foreign investment was hit in Lutsk. Another business was attacked in Manevychi, where two people were wounded and the fate of five more is still unknown.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said a drone strike on the energy sector in Lutsk came just as he was meeting Emmanuel Macron in Brussels. He said Russian "terror" has barely let up in recent days, and that Moscow has ignored US President Donald Trump's proposal for a ceasefire on energy.
Rivne region
Seven people were wounded in the Russian attack on Rivne region, the State Emergency Service said. Civilian infrastructure was also damaged. Rescuers, bomb disposal teams and psychologists are working at the strike sites.
It was not the first strike on Rivne this week. On Tuesday, 13 October, Russia attacked the city and 30 people were wounded.
Uman
A drone fell in Uman and set a multi-storey building on fire, the National Police said. Five people were wounded. Three are in hospital, and medics treated the other two at the scene.
The drone also destroyed a neighbouring security building. Rescuers pulled a man from the rubble.
Odesa and Odesa region
The overnight Russian strike on Odesa region wounded four civilians, the State Emergency Service said. An energy facility was damaged and a company that makes household goods caught fire.
Another attack followed in the morning and damaged seven private houses. No one was hurt this time. Firefighters stopped work several times and pulled back to safety because more strikes were threatened.
Sumy
A Russian drone hit a shopping centre in Sumy on Friday, the State Emergency Service said. Three people are reported wounded so far, and the roof and facade of the building were damaged.
No fire broke out. Rescuers checked the area and helped people at the scene.
