The regional election commission in Burgas has rejected as unfounded a complaint that Karageorgievo mayor Metin Latifov campaigned on Facebook, the commission said. The complaint arrived by email today.
The sender claims the mayor campaigned for a presidential candidate in the Facebook group "Mayoralty of Karageorgievo".
On checking the page, the commission found posts dated 30 October 2026 in Latifov's name. They call for a vote with a specific ballot and include a photo of a political leader.
The commission said the posts are Latifov's as a private person, and the group is not an official channel of the administration. It said it has not been proved that the mayor used administrative resources to campaign.
The profile belongs to an individual, not a media outlet, so the ban in Article 182(4) of the Electoral Code does not apply to it, the commission said. The posts date from before the campaign ended, so the campaign rules were not broken.
The Burgas commission also rejected as unfounded a complaint against Zidarovo mayor Hristo Bardukov, as we reported in October. He was accused of urging people to vote with a certain ballot from his personal Facebook profile. The commission said the profile belongs to an individual, not a media outlet.
The decision can be appealed.
