Large-scale smuggling of exotic species
During a specialized inspection at the Danube Bridge near Ruse, law enforcement authorities uncovered an illegal transport of exotic birds worth hundreds of thousands of euros. The operation was conducted jointly by the BFSA, Border Police, and RIEW – Ruse.
During the inspection of a van with Targovishte registration, 47 birds with forged veterinary certificates were discovered.
What species were discovered?
- 11 pairs of Papuan hornbills (Aceros plicatus);
- 8 parrots of the Cardinal lory species (Chalcopsitta cardinalis);
- 13 ornamental pigeons and 4 ornamental chickens.
Investigators believe that the shipment is part of an international channel that passed through Turkey and was transshipped in the Shumen area, with a final destination of Central Europe.
Why is this case serious?
The price of a single Papuan hornbill reaches 10,000 euros, and pairs exceed 25,000 euros. In addition to the lack of a transport license, some of the species fall under the special regime of CITES – a convention for the protection of endangered species.
Currently, the birds are housed at the Center for Nature and Animal Protection in Dobrich, and citations have been issued against the driver. The investigation continues.
