Two truck drivers who were carrying meat to a meat plant in Lovech have been detained under the Interior Ministry Act. Their trucks held large amounts of marijuana and cocaine. The district prosecutor's office in Lovech will decide whether to ask the district court to impose a pre-trial restraint measure on them, spokeswoman Svetla Ivanova said.
This story follows our earlier report on more than 200 kg of marijuana and cocaine found in two refrigerated trucks near Lovech.
Two pre-trial proceedings have been opened over possession of high-risk drugs in large amounts, meant for distribution. The Chief Directorate for Combating Organised Crime is leading the investigation, and Ivanova is the supervising prosecutor on the case.
"As far as I know, the drivers are not from Lovech and have nothing to do with the plant where they delivered this meat," she told Bulgarian National Television (BNT).
The suppliers are outside companies, Ivanova added.
The law sets a penalty of 3 to 12 years in prison and a fine of €5,113 to €25,565 (€10,000 to €25,565 (50,000 leva)).
