In the midst of the academic autumn, Burgas State University "Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov" officially welcomed its new leader. Today, September 5, after the solemn signing of a contract with the Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Dr. Sotir Sotirov took office as rector of one of the most significant higher education institutions in the region. This act marks the beginning of a new era for the university, which manages an impressive structure, including over 150 habilitated lecturers, over 190 non-habilitated lecturers, nearly 40 lecturers and senior lecturers, and more than 200 administrative staff.
Long-standing contribution and established scholar
The choice of Prof. Sotirov for the position of rector did not come out of the blue. He won the race in a highly contested battle, facing three serious opponents. His election is seen as recognition of his long-standing dedication to the academic community and his exceptional contribution to science.
Professor Sotirov is an established name in the world of science, especially in the dynamic field of artificial intelligence. His achievements have been crowned with numerous national and international awards, which underscore the scale of his work. In addition to his academic merits, he is also known as an active public figure and former municipal councilor, always defending a clear civic position.
Over the last more than 25 years, Prof. Sotirov has left a lasting mark on the university. He has held a number of key posts, including head of department, vice-dean, and vice-rector for two consecutive terms. His work has significantly contributed to the strategic development of the higher education institution, shaping its image over the years.
Scientific achievements and leadership positions
As a leading scientist, he has led and coordinated more than 15 large-scale projects at the national and international level. These initiatives, carried out within the framework of various national and international programs, cover key areas such as biomedical research and intelligent systems. Among his most significant achievements are the leadership of two centers of excellence and one center of competence. Currently, as the head of the "Laboratory of Intelligent Systems", he continues to be at the center of innovation, being involved in nine active projects_q_one center of excellence, two centers of competence, three international, and three national projects.
