The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense is facing challenges in planning the delivery of the remaining six F-16 Block 70 fighters, according to a statement by Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov. In response to an inquiry from MP Ivaylo Mirchev from "We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria", Minister Zapryanov emphasized the complexity of the process and the impossibility of providing specific dates for the aircraft's arrival.
The process of planning flights from the USA to Bulgaria for the F-16 Block 70 is extremely complex and requires coordination between various structures of the US Air Force and NATO member countries. Minister Zapryanov explained that key factors in planning include:
- The need to maintain a constant fuel supply during the transatlantic flight
- The formation of groups of aircraft for flying from the USA to Europe
An additional complication is the limited number of US Air Force aircraft capable of air-to-air refueling. These aircraft are used intensively to provide transoceanic flights and are often subject to schedule changes due to priority tasks of the US Air Force. This can lead to changes or cancellations of planned flights for allied or partner countries, including Bulgaria.
Bulgaria has already received the first two F-16 Block 70 fighters in April and June of this year. According to the 2019 contract, the country should receive a total of eight such aircraft by the end of 2025. Plans envision the Bulgarian Air Force having a full squadron of F-16 Block 70s by the end of 2027, when an additional eight aircraft are expected to be delivered under the second contract.
MP Mirchev's inquiry also included questions about infrastructure development and the deployment of a simulator for pilot training. Although Minister Zapryanov's response does not provide specific information on these points, they remain important aspects of the overall implementation of the new fighters in the Bulgarian armed forces.
The acquisition of F-16 Block 70s is part of a broader program to modernize the Bulgarian armed forces and bring them in line with NATO standards. This significant investment in the country's defense capabilities underscores Bulgaria's commitment to the Alliance's collective security and its aspiration to maintain modern and effective armed forces.
Despite the challenges in planning and delivery, the acquisition of these modern fighters is expected to significantly enhance Bulgaria's air capabilities and contribute to more effective execution of air patrol missions and protection of the country's and region's airspace.
