Government Appoints Miroslav Rashkov as Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior
In the midst of a tense political week, the Bulgarian government is meeting today for a regular session dedicated to a series of important decisions concerning both internal security and local self-government. A major highlight on the preliminary agenda is the long-awaited official appointment of Chief Commissioner Miroslav Rashkov as Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior (MoI)—a position he has been temporarily holding for a year now.
The proposal for the President to issue a decree confirming Rashkov's appointment comes after intense high-level consultations and is seen as a key step towards stabilizing the leadership of the country's largest security institution. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov himself commented to journalists that this nomination is "based on the work of the MoI's professional leadership, Miroslav Rashkov's political neutrality, and his potential to lead the structures within the MoI, staying away from political disputes".
The Minister of Interior, Daniel Mitov, joined this tone of approval, emphasizing that Rashkov is "an experienced police officer" and that "work is going well" under his leadership. The minister stated that he has "no hesitations or objections" regarding the candidacy.
Other Important Decisions
The statements made yesterday by the two senior state officials underscore the government's consensus on the choice, which is perceived as a guarantee of continuity and professionalism in the internal security sector.
Although internal security dominates the headlines, the cabinet meeting also covers other vital issues affecting all Bulgarian municipalities. The agenda includes a discussion of additional transfers to municipal budgets for 2025, intended for the implementation of activities under national programs. This decision is expected to provide additional financial support for local authorities, allowing them to carry out key projects and improve the quality of life for their citizens, in accordance with programs approved by the Council of Ministers.
It remains to be seen whether the session will lead to the swift and seamless confirmation of all agenda items. The announcement from the press office of the Council of Ministers is short and clear, but it reflects the busy schedule of the executive branch at a time when society expects visible results in key areas.
