Historic start of the 109th Giro d'Italia in Bulgaria
Frenchman Paul Magnier secured a prestigious victory in the first stage of the Giro d'Italia cycling race, which started in Bulgaria this year. The 147-kilometer route from Nesebar to Burgas offered a dynamic race along the Black Sea coast.
Magnier showed nerves of steel and endurance, prevailing in the mass final sprint with a time of 3 hours, 21 minutes, and 8 seconds.
Dramatic finish in Burgas
Second and third place went to Tobias Lund Andresen (Denmark) and Ethan Vernon (Great Britain), respectively. Favorite Jonathan Milan finished fourth. The stage was marred by a serious incident – 500 meters before the finish, a mass crash in the peloton stopped a large part of the cyclists, with only the first ten riders avoiding the collision.
- Route: Nesebar – Burgas (147 km)
- Winner: Paul Magnier (France)
- Next stage: Burgas – Veliko Tarnovo (221 km)
Although Jonathan Milan was active during the intermediate sprints, Magnier proved stronger in the final sprint. Tomorrow, the cyclists head to Veliko Tarnovo for the second stage of the race.
