Nearly 900 drivers were caught in violation on the first day since the average speed registration began on the country's roads. The alarming statistics were announced by the director of the National Toll Management, Professor Oleg Asenov. He was a guest on a television show to clarify details about the newly introduced system and to present the first results of its operation.
According to the data provided by Professor Asenov, the average intensity of detected violators is four people per minute. One of the most shocking cases was registered near the exit for the town of Ihtiman, where a driver was filmed moving at an average speed of 222 km/h, which is a gross violation of the limits.
An especially large number of violators were registered on a stretch that is often in the authorities' sights due to the high number of incidents and violations.
"We often talk about this stretch," commented Professor Asenov, "last night we had 193 violators."
The stretch in question is between Dolni Dabnik and Telish.
The entry into force of the new road traffic rules was promulgated in the "State Gazette" on August 5, 2025, after the changes were voted on by the National Assembly. The new regulations concern all road users – from drivers of motor vehicles, to pedestrians and cyclists, to users of electric mobility devices. The goal of the changes is to increase road safety and reduce incidents.
All these changes were explained in detail by the experts from the State Agency "Road Safety" (SARS) in an analysis prepared specifically for the section "On the road, life has priority," which is carried out jointly with the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). It presents the main innovations and their importance for the safety of travelers.
