The Council of Ministers has approved a report on road safety in 2025 and on progress with the national strategy for 2021–2030, the government press office said. The report finds some improvement in a few indicators, but says road safety is still a serious problem for society.
The head of the State Agency "Road Traffic Safety" wrote the report, as the Road Traffic Act requires. It covers policies and measures at national, regional and municipal level.
The report reviews what has been achieved, where the weak spots are, the current challenges and the outlook for state policy. It says managing risks is proving hard, and there are gaps at some levels of protection.
This calls for reforms and a new approach to cut injuries in road crashes, the report says. It recommends co-ordinated, consistent and systematic action to make roads safer and to meet the national targets.
Road deaths in Bulgaria fell by 28% between 2014 and 2024, from 93 to 74 per million people, according to European Commission figures in a separate report presented earlier the same day.
The EU average dropped from 56 per million in 2014 to 44 per million last year. Bulgaria remains above it.
