Contested election in parliament
The National Assembly elected Plamen Veselinov Todorov as a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). He was the only candidate for the position from the parliamentary quota, receiving the support of 124 deputies from "Progressive Bulgaria".
"The commission is a collective body and cannot be used as a bludgeon," stated the chairman of the relevant committee, Dimitar Balev.
Arguments "against" and suspicions of backroom dealings
The opposition parties, namely GERB-SDS, Democratic Bulgaria, We Continue the Change, and Revival, voted against. The main criticisms were directed at:
- The lack of clear answers from Todorov regarding cases related to the Public Financial Inspection Agency (ADFI) (Albena resort complex).
- Suspicions of backroom influence and the lack of a transparent work plan.
- Questions regarding the candidate's political independence.
Who is Plamen Todorov?
Plamen Todorov previously held the position of Director of the Public Financial Inspection Agency (ADFI). Born in 1979 in Pleven, he holds a Master's degree in Law and is a graduate of the Academy of the Ministry of Interior. His professional path includes many years of work within the Ministry of Interior system and the financial inspection, as well as specializations abroad.
The debates in the plenary hall were marked by sharp exchanges between the various political groups, with PP-DB questioning the capacity of the new commission member, and Revival expressing skepticism regarding the overall effectiveness of the anti-corruption body.
