No risk to national security
Minister of Defense Dimitar Stoyanov stated to journalists that at the moment there is no direct threat to the national security of Bulgaria. Information received from the Military Intelligence Service and confirmed by partner services from NATO and the EU rules out any risk to Bulgarian facilities or bases used by the US, such as the Bezmer Air Base.
"These are opinions that sow unnecessary panic among the population, and there is no need for them," the minister stated categorically.
Reaction to foreign press publications
The comment was prompted by an article in the Financial Times, which claims that Iranian forces are considering strikes on US assets in Southeast Europe. Minister Stoyanov emphasized that Bulgaria is not part of the conflict between Iran and the US, but is merely fulfilling its allied commitments.
- The services are monitoring the situation in real time.
- The Ministry of Interior has taken additional security measures at Bezmer.
- Greece has offered assistance with Patriot air defense systems if needed.
Despite the speculation, the Bulgarian authorities assure that the security environment remains unchanged and that citizens should not succumb to panic.
