Revolution in the automotive industry: The era of the circular economy
New European rules aimed at a complete transformation of the vehicle lifecycle come into effect on August 13. The main goal is to turn “car graveyards” into a source of valuable raw materials.
The European Commission is setting ambitious targets: 25% recycled plastic in new cars by 2036.
Key changes in the regulation:
- Design for dismantling: New cars will be designed so that their parts can be recycled as easily as possible.
- Secondary raw materials: Mandatory quotas for the use of recycled steel, aluminum, and plastic are being introduced.
- Stopping unregulated exports: From 2031, only roadworthy cars can be exported outside the EU to avoid the “export of waste.”
Business opportunities and ecology
The regulation also expands its scope to include trucks, buses, and motorcycles. This creates a new market niche for waste management operators and forces manufacturers to work in closer cooperation with recycling centers. With over 10 million cars reaching the end of their life each year in Europe, this regulation is vital for reducing dependence on imported raw materials.
