A new railway line connects Ukraine and Bulgaria: Tourism, connections and the future of bilateral cooperation

An upward trend in Ukrainian tourism to Bulgaria, supported by the upcoming railway connection. The project strengthens economic, social and cultural ties, opening doors for more travel, education and cooperation.

The launch of a new railway line between Ukraine and Bulgaria is expected in the summer of this year. The project is part of efforts to improve transport connectivity in the region and deepen bilateral cooperation.

The news was confirmed by Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba after a meeting with Bulgarian Transport Minister Korman Ismailov. The line will pass through Romania, and the route and technical parameters are currently being coordinated.

The two countries also discussed the development of strategic transport corridors, the role of the Danube region and the possibilities for the expansion of highways. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening cooperation in the Black Sea, especially in the field of shipping safety.

The tourist flow from Ukraine to Bulgaria is growing

The new railway connection comes against the backdrop of a growing tourist flow from Ukraine. In July 2024 alone, visits increased 2.2 times, exceeding 245,000 people. Ukrainian tourists make up about 20% of all foreign tourists in Bulgaria.

This trend highlights interest in the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, attracting with safety, quality of services and easy communication. Improved transport connectivity will accelerate growth and establish Ukraine as a key market for Bulgarian tourism.

Importance for Bulgarians in Ukraine

The project has a strong social and cultural significance, especially for the Bulgarian diasporas in Ukraine. Easy access to Bulgaria is of key importance for education, work and family ties. The line is expected to strengthen cultural exchange and interest in Bulgaria as an educational and tourist destination.
