Historical connection between Nesebar and the "Good Pope"
A bas-relief of Angelo Roncalli, the future Pope John XXIII, was officially unveiled in Nesebar. The solemn event highlighted the seaside town's deep historical connection with Italy, dating back a century.
"Ten years after his arrival in 1926, Roncalli received permission from Pope Pius XI to sign with the title 'of Mesembria'," shared Mayor Nikolay Dimitrov.
Giro d'Italia and spiritual heritage
The unveiling coincided with a prestigious sporting event – the 109th Giro d'Italia cycling race. The race director, Stefano Allocchio, expressed his admiration for the tribute that Bulgaria pays to the "Good Pope".
