The National Revenue Agency (NRA) is conducting enhanced fiscal control at border crossings with Greece and Romania, with inspections based on risk analysis. Chief Inspector Adrian Vasilev, head of a sector at the NRA's General Directorate for Fiscal Control, pointed out that from August 8 to September 8, over 9,800 shipments of high fiscal risk goods were inspected, which is an increase compared to the 2,700 inspections conducted during the same period a year earlier.
Tax authority statistics reveal a total of 59 violations of tax legislation. As a result, 162 security measures were imposed with a total value of over 633,000 euros, whereas last year the value was around 352,000 euros with 128 measures imposed. In the context of these measures, Vasilev also commented on the discussions between institutions regarding improving road control, noting that the NRA supports initiatives for better coordination between institutions and the organization of control along major road routes.
Among the cases reported by the agency are attempts to circumvent fiscal control. Eight cases of concealing cargo in delivery vans using various materials for camouflage have been registered. Furthermore, in the current year (2024), 29 cases of non-compliance with imposed security measures were identified, which necessitated the seizure of the goods by the tax authorities.
Specific violations were illustrated through examples:
- A case involving a luxury Ferrari sports car worth 436,000 euros, where security measures of approximately 137,000 euros were imposed on the asset due to the recipient's liabilities. Adrian Vasilev explained that although it is not confiscated, the vehicle cannot be sold or used in a way that would frustrate the security until the debt is fully settled.
- The transport of two vehicles worth 59,000 euros without a prior declaration to the NRA. The violation was sanctioned with a 23,600 euro penalty, with the inspector emphasizing that the law provides for a sanction of up to 40 percent of the tax base of the goods in the absence of a correct declaration.
