Over 60% of Burgas residents are overweight, and about 30% are obese, announced from the University Hospital Burgas.

Dr. Stefka Stefanova, head of the Endocrinology Department, calls for a change in lifestyle and adherence to simple rules that have a great effect, in connection with World Obesity Day.

A leading risk factor for obesity is lifestyle, even with a genetic predisposition.

Men are more often overweight, while in women the risk of obesity increases after 40-50 years.

Fats in the abdominal area are dangerous, which increase the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Obesity is a disease associated with more than 200 diseases. It requires a long-term strategy.

Patients with complications are often admitted to the Department.

Among the myths are "magical" foods and supplements.

The type and quality of food, hormones, genetics, and the feeling of satiety are important.

Weight gain is due to hidden calories, reduced muscle mass, or the intake of medications.

The best strategy is long-term.

A preventive campaign is forthcoming.

Burgas Municipality conducts preventive programs for students.
