Is bathing at the Officers' Beach safe?
Good news for beachgoers in Varna – the seawater in the area of the Officers' Beach is once again completely safe for swimming. This information was officially confirmed by the Regional Administration following a series of laboratory tests.
The latest samples show that the levels of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci are significantly below the permissible limits, making the beach suitable for visitors.
What happened with the samples in June?
After the water temporarily failed to meet hygiene requirements on June 16, the Regional Health Inspectorate (RHI) conducted re-tests just three days later. The results definitively prove an improvement in the indicators.
Measures and inspections by the institutions
Regional Governor Mario Smarkov initiated a working meeting with representatives of the RHI, RIEW, ViK (Water and Sewerage) Varna, and the Black Sea Basin Directorate. The goal is to ensure the safety of citizens and to determine the causes of the temporary fluctuations.
- Peak load times of the Shokarov Canal were checked.
- No unauthorized discharges or technical violations were found.
- The institutions are discussing long-term measures for the modernization of the sewage network.
Why do these deviations occur?
Experts explain that Varna uses a combined drainage system. During intense rainfall, rainwater mixes with domestic sewage, which can lead to short-term microbiological deviations. It is important to note that this does not mean permanent pollution, but is a temporary effect of weather conditions.
