A predatory bear attacked the Sopot Monastery again
The terror of Sopot has returned. The predatory bear that caused a stir with its bold entry into the courtyard of the Sopot Monastery "St. Spas" yesterday, has revisited the holy cloister. Its second return last night caused even greater concern among locals and monks.
The predator's new victim is another of the donated lambs intended for a religious sacrifice, marking the second attack in two days. The bear's return was documented by the cameras of the State Forestry. The footage shows the animal approaching from the southern side of the monastery, likely in search of new victims.
Teams from the forestry department responded to the call and took immediate action. The officials used a vehicle to drive the bear back into the mountains, hoping this will be enough to discourage it from new visits.
The events of the last two days have tested the patience and security in the area. Therefore, a joint commission from the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW) and the State Forestry is expected to conduct an inspection at 11:00 AM today and document the damages. All of this is happening amid heightened tension in the area and concerns for the animal's future.
The bear's future is uncertain and depends on its next actions. According to current legislation, if the predatory bear is not deterred and returns again, further, more drastic measures can be taken. The law provides that after two consecutive attacks, the animal can be proposed for culling to the Minister of Agriculture and Food.
Against this backdrop, local authorities are issuing an urgent appeal to the population. People are warned not to feed the bear under any circumstances and not to leave food in the cottage area above Sopot. The hope is that the lack of easily accessible food will force it to return to its natural habitat and not pose a threat to the monastery and the residents of nearby settlements.
