Increased control against illegal imports
In response to frequent reports of unfair commercial practices, the state has announced the start of mass inspections at border crossings. The goal is to limit the import of fruits and vegetables that do not meet standards or are imported without the necessary documents.
The inspections are being carried out in a coordinated manner by the Ministry of Agriculture, the BFSA, and the Customs Agency, with the aim of protecting the domestic market and consumer health.
Why are farmers protesting?
Tensions escalated following a protest by producers from the Haskovo region, who expressed their dissatisfaction with the current market situation:
- Low purchase prices: Producers claim that the prices offered to them do not even cover the costs of growing the produce.
- Unfair competition: Cheap imports are pushing Bulgarian goods out of retail chains and wholesale markets.
- Lack of market protection: Farmers are demanding stricter control over the origin and quality of imported goods.
The increased presence of regulatory authorities at the border is expected to lead to greater transparency in supplies and to stop the entry of goods with questionable origin.
