From July 4 to 6, national law enforcement agencies carried out a large-scale specialized operation to improve road safety. The event covered the entire territory of the country with a mobilization of 2,300 police teams who conducted thorough vehicle inspections.
The results of the checks revealed extremely alarming trends among drivers. A total of 35,729 passenger cars and 3,978 trucks were subjected to a thorough review, during which over 13,900 administrative acts were drawn up.
The most concerning data are related to driver categories that pose a serious risk to road safety. Police officers identified 16 drivers operating vehicles after using narcotic substances, and 44 drivers with alcohol content above the permissible 1.2 per mille.
Serious violations were also recorded on highways. 29 drivers were fined 1,000 leva for using the emergency lane, with temporary revocation of their driving licenses pending. Nearly 300 drivers were sanctioned for improper overtaking.
Statistical data show an alarming trend in road trauma. If in 2020 the number of road fatalities was 468 people, the following year this number increased to 561. A positive moment is the reduction in the first six months of the current year, when fatalities were reduced to 177.
Minister Daniel Mitov emphasized that compared to the same period last year, there is a significant improvement - 218 fewer serious accidents, 15 fewer victims, and 225 fewer injured.
The Ministry of Interior leadership announced that similar operations will continue throughout the summer season, using both traditional and new control methods, including unmarked vehicles.
