The Ministry of Interior reported the results of a specialized operation against risky drivers. Over 52,000 fines in 10 days and 448 drivers caught behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Increased road control

The acting Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, announced that 41 attempts at illegal street racing had been successfully thwarted across the country. The measures are part of a large-scale police operation aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

Our battle is not to increase fines, but to be proactively positioned in order to reduce the number of victims, Commissioner Nikolov stated.

Violation statistics

Lachezar Bliznakov from the Traffic Police added that a 24-hour European marathon for alcohol and drug control is currently underway. The focus remains on speed, with the number of unmarked police cars on the roads being increased.

Regarding the sanctioning of average speed, the Ministry of Interior confirmed that this is a top priority. A procedure is underway to increase the technical equipment for issuing electronic tickets.
