Burgas Airport Reports Record Growth: Millionth Passenger Arrives Earlier Than Ever
BURGAS. The tourist season on Bulgaria’s Southern Black Sea coast is booming – Burgas Airport welcomed its millionth passenger a full week earlier than last year. Airport Director Vasil Aprilov shared the news with journalists, emphasizing the strong interest from foreign markets and the recovery of key routes.
"If you remember, last year we welcomed the millionth passenger on August 7. This year, it happened a week earlier. This proves that our expectations were met," said Aprilov.
According to him, the number of served passengers has already increased by over 50% compared to the previous season. Charter flights from Germany, operated by Electra Airways and SunExpress, have played a key role.
"With three aircraft based here, we serve seven key destinations to Germany. That’s a major achievement," he noted.
Poland Overtakes the UK in Tourist Arrivals
Recent data shows that Poland is now the top tourist market, overtaking the United Kingdom. Following them are the Czech Republic, Germany, and Israel.
Flights to and from Israel Fully Restored
After a temporary decline in traffic to Israel at the start of the season, the routes have now been fully restored:
"We expect around 670 flights from Israel by the end of the summer. There was a drop early in the season, but traffic is now fully restored," Aprilov explained.
Major Renovation Planned for Winter
This winter, the airport will temporarily close for a complete overhaul of the runway and apron, starting in November.
"We have officially announced the full rehabilitation of the runway. From November to April, the airport will be closed," the director stated.
Terminal 2 Revamped, Gate Garden Opened
In addition to the busy flight schedule, the airport has also made major infrastructure improvements. In July, the new Gate Garden relaxation area was opened, and Terminal 2 received a full interior renovation:
"New retail areas, improved interior design, a new travel experience – we now offer an entirely upgraded service quality," Aprilov said.
Forecast: 4% Growth by the End of 2025
Airport management expects at least 4% overall passenger growth by the end of the year, thanks to active partnerships with airlines and the strategic restoration of international routes.
