The Great Tarnovo football world says goodbye to one of its brightest sports personalities. Stefan Chakarov, who built a remarkable career as a player and referee, left this world at the age of 78 on Saturday, August 2.
Born on August 8, 1946, in Zlataritza, Chakarov gradually earned his place in the men's team of Etar while still a student at Third High School. His sports biography includes over 400 official matches, in most of which he was the team captain, leading his team to memorable performances in European football tournaments.
After finishing his active competitive career, Chakarov established himself as one of the most authoritative Bulgarian football referees. His professionalism led him to leadership positions in the Bulgarian Football Union and the Zonal Council of BFS in Great Tarnovo.
His achievements are recognized and documented - in 2001 he was officially named the second most significant footballer of Great Tarnovo for the entire 20th century, immediately after the legendary Krasimir Balakov. His sports legacy continues through his son Kaloyan Chakarov - also a footballer and coach.
The wake will be held on August 5 at 10 am in the ritual building of the Great Tarnovo cemetery. The football community is preparing to pay its last respects to its unforgettable hero.
