Critical water situation at Lake Srebarna
A large-scale operation to transfer water from the Danube River to the lake in the Srebarna Biosphere Reserve is underway. Nearly 1.8 million cubic meters of water have been provided so far, reported the RIEW-Ruse.
"The situation is complex; we are working with four pump lines to maintain the vital water balance in the reserve," commented Reni Petrova from the eco-inspection.
Challenges facing the teams
- Clearing sediment: An option involving a barge is being discussed to clean the canal and ensure a better water inflow.
- Combating algae: Booms are being installed to prevent the pumps from sucking in blooming algae.
- Hydrological drop: Danube water levels continue to fall, reaching negative values relative to the conditional zero (Ruse -116 cm, Silistra -102 cm).
Problems for navigation
The hydrological situation along the entire Bulgarian section remains complex. The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) reports serious difficulties related to the draft of vessels. Over the past 24 hours, assistance had to be provided to a stranded ship near Lom after sandbars blocked the fairway.
