Rumen Radev announced his decision to resign on January 19th in an address to the Bulgarian people, in which he announced that he was addressing the citizens for the last time as the country's president.

The resignation was submitted to the Constitutional Court on January 20th. On the same day, the court opened a case regarding the submitted resignation.

According to Article 97 of the Constitution, one of the possibilities for the premature termination of the powers of the President and the Vice President is the submission of a resignation to the Constitutional Court. The powers of the President and Vice President are terminated upon the establishment by the Constitutional Court of the indicated circumstances. According to the Basic Law, when the head of state resigns, the Vice President takes office as President until the end of the term. The Vice President of Bulgaria at the moment is Iliana Yotova.
