Mayors in the Yambol Region: "Bezmer" must not become a base for foreign operations
The mayors of the five municipalities in the Yambol region – Yambol, Tundzha, Straldzha, Elhovo, and Bolyarovo – have joined forces in a common stance against plans to base American tanker aircraft at the "Bezmer" airbase.
"As representatives of local government, we express our position to protect the security, peace, and interests of the population of the Yambol region," the local leaders state.
Why is the local government opposing it?
- Risk of being drawn into conflicts: The mayors emphasize that the presence of military aircraft serving regions with active hostilities threatens the peace of the citizens.
- Public discontent: Residents of the region are expressing serious alarm, and in the village of Bezmer, a petition has already been launched, and protest actions are being prepared.
- Sensible foreign policy: In their position, they insist that Bulgaria should not be involved directly or indirectly in conflicts that are not its own.
What comes next?
Local government calls on the National Assembly and the Council of Ministers to show responsibility and listen to the voice of the people before final decisions are made regarding the future of the airbase.
