Firefighters moved 65 people out of an earthquake-risk apartment block in Bucharest's Drumul Taberei district after a large crack was found between the fifth and eighth floors, the Bucharest-Ilfov Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said.
A resident who spotted the crack called 112. The building in Sector 6 has a ground floor, eight upper floors and 36 flats.
"To prevent any possible danger, we decided to move the residents out as a precaution," the inspectorate said.
A special rescue unit, a water and foam truck, a SMURD medical team and a vehicle to carry people went to the scene. Because of the low temperatures, the residents are being given temporary shelter.
The cause of the damage is not known. Officials are checking whether it is linked to the earthquake on 19 October. The State Inspectorate in Construction has been asked for a technical assessment.
