A historic breakthrough for Bulgarian financial diplomacy
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Galab Donev held key meetings in Luxembourg, marking an important event – the first participation of a Bulgarian finance minister in a meeting of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
This event is a natural continuation of Bulgaria's full membership in the Eurozone and further strengthens the country's participation in the common European financial architecture.
What is the role of the ESM?
The ESM is a strategic EU instrument for ensuring financial stability. Its main functions include:
- Providing financial assistance to Eurozone countries in difficulty.
- Protecting fiscal stability within the monetary union.
- Coordination during economic crises.
Upcoming meetings within ECOFIN
In the period June 11-12, 2026, Minister Donev, together with Deputy Minister Metodi Metodiev, will take part in:
- A meeting of the EU Council on Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN).
- A regular meeting of the Eurogroup.
During these meetings, discussions are expected on the European Commission's spring package, policy debates regarding market integration and supervision, as well as the approval of amendments to the recovery and resilience plans of a number of member states.
