Labour inspectors found 153,655 violations in 40,478 checks from the start of the year to October, the press office of the General Labour Inspectorate (GLI) said.

More than 71,000 of the violations involve relations between employers and workers. Another 81,448 concern health and safety at work.

In 2,944 cases, people worked without an employment contract. Inspectors stopped work at 836 sites, work areas, machines and facilities. They removed 109 workers from work, up from 85 in the same period a year earlier.

Inspectors also investigated 792 workplace accidents. Over the ten months, the agency issued more than 16,920 permits for minors to work.

The GLI filed 11 petitions to start insolvency proceedings against employers. Such a petition is filed when a firm has paid at least a third of its staff more than two months late.

Inspectors drew up 8,449 reports of administrative violations. Penalty orders that have taken effect and approved settlements total more than €6m.

GLI executive director Ekaterina Asenova, an engineer, spoke at the start of October. She said well-organised work on health and safety protects human life, saves money and guarantees health and safety.

The inspectorate turns 119 today. It was set up as the State Labour Inspectorate under the Labour Inspectorate Act, which Prince Ferdinand approved and the State Gazette published in issue 238 on 3 November 1907.
