An initiative committee proposed that June 3rd be marked as a Day in Memory of those who died in peacetime, saving human lives. At a press conference at the National Press Club of BTA in Sofia, representatives of the initiative committee presented the idea and the reasons for the proposal.
The idea is to establish a day to remember the cases of heroism of people who gave their lives in peacetime to save other people's lives. It is unfair and painful for us to forget them, said Alexander Dimitrov, a member of the initiative committee and chairman of the association “Bulgarian Center for Protection and Development”.
We would like to celebrate their feat on June 3, immediately after June 2, when the memory of those who died heroically for the freedom of Bulgaria is honored, added Alexander Dimitrov.
He pointed out that there are many people who lost their lives in peacetime and are unfairly forgotten. This is wrong for us and must be changed, and the way is to create a feeling of connection between the two dates on this day, and on June 3 at 12:00 again the sirens should sound.
In this way, the significance of this act of self-sacrifice, which people made in the name of saving other lives, will be emphasized, Dimitrov pointed out.
Shining examples of such self-sacrifice are the young men Hristo Stefanov and Petar Todorov, who drowned but saved a child on the beach in Silistar; Plamen Petkov from Stara Zagora, who saved a child from drowning in England but lost his own life; cinematographer Grigor Kumitski, who saved a Russian girl from drowning, but he himself failed to save himself from the rip current. There are many examples of such self-sacrifice, the representatives of the initiative committee point out.
The initiative is currently supported by the Union of Bulgarian Journalists (UBJ), the Union of Bulgarian Writers (UBW), the National Association of Volunteers in the Republic of Bulgaria, the Syndicate of Bulgarian Teachers, the Bulgarian Red Cross, municipalities from several regions in the country, etc., said Petko Kolev - member of the initiative committee and chairman of the general Bulgarian foundation „Tangra TanNakRa”.
The initiative committee invites every citizen who has information about a person who has performed a feat to save a life and lost their own to share the story in the Facebook group specially created for the initiative „In memory of the heroes of peacetime!“
