President Iliana Yotova announced that she will issue decrees for the appointment of a caretaker government and the scheduling of elections on April 19. The Head of State stated this after the candidate for caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov presented the composition of a government.

“I will issue a decree for the appointment of your caretaker cabinet and I will await your oath before the National Assembly. I will also issue a decree for holding parliamentary elections on April 19,” said Iliana Yotova.

The vote in April will be the eighth since 2021.

After the protests at the end of last year, the government with Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned, and Rumen Radev (President from 2017-2026) held consultations with the formations in parliament. At the beginning of this year, Radev handed out three mandates to form a government - to GERB-SDS, “We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria” and “Alliance for Rights and Freedoms”, but all three were immediately returned unfulfilled, after which it became known that there would be early parliamentary elections. On February 12, Iliana Yotova appointed the Deputy Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Andrey Gyurov as caretaker Prime Minister and tasked him with proposing the composition of a government.

According to the Law on the BNB, in case the Governor or Deputy Governor has explicitly expressed consent to be appointed as caretaker Prime Minister, they shall resign.
