Europe must free itself from its dependence on Russian gas - declared today European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen, during a visit to the "Nova Provadia" compressor station. Those present immediately sensed the importance of the event, given the current geopolitical situation. Together with the Bulgarian Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov and the Deputy State Secretary for Energy Security of Hungary Csaba Marosvári, Jørgensen got acquainted with the implementation of the third lot - from Rupcha to Vetrino, a key part of the ambitious project for the construction of the Vertical Gas Corridor. The corridor, which should connect Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Ukraine, is of crucial importance for the future of the energy security of the Old Continent.

The tension in the atmosphere was palpable while the officials were inspecting the site. Commissioner Jørgensen stressed that the European Commission (EC) will always support such strategic projects. According to him, they represent the way in which the European Union can respond to the actions of Vladimir Putin and Russia, which, according to him, are turning energy into a weapon used to blackmail member states. The Vertical Gas Corridor, said Jørgensen, is of extreme importance for European security. He stressed that the project will serve to achieve several goals simultaneously. Jørgensen explained that this will demonstrate solidarity and support for Moldova and Ukraine. In addition, it will ensure reliable energy supplies for all citizens of the European Union at affordable prices. The Commissioner added that the realization of the gas corridor will support the competitiveness of the EU, increase security and respond to the need for a greater focus on the fight against climate change.

Csaba Marosvári, in his address to the guests, also emphasized the key role of the project for the European Union. He stressed that Hungary is actively working to increase the capacity of its network, connecting it with Ukraine, Moldova and Romania. Marosvári also touched upon the need for the European Commission to start financially supporting projects like the Vertical Gas Corridor again, especially when they are strategic and ensure diversification of supplies. His words were received with understanding by those present.
