The Automotive Manufacturers Association announced a large-scale initiative to expand the electric charging infrastructure in Bulgaria. The project envisages the construction of 160 modern stations, funded with nearly 40 million leva, which is expected to catalyze the process of electric vehicle penetration in the country.

Currently, electric vehicles constitute only 0.4% of the total vehicle fleet, which numbers 3.5 million vehicles. Despite their low share, electric vehicles are already demonstrating a significant economic effect – in the first half of 2025 alone, they have saved fuel costs of around 150 million leva.

Statistics show a positive dynamic in the sector. In the first months of the year, electric vehicle sales have grown by an impressive 15.3% compared to the previous year. The new charging infrastructure is expected to eliminate the main obstacle to their mass adoption – the insufficient number of charging stations.

Experts define the project as a key moment in the green transition of the transport sector. Expanding the charging network will not only facilitate electric vehicle owners but also stimulate the further penetration of environmentally friendly vehicles in the Bulgarian automotive market.
