Electric vehicles are losing popularity in Europe

The new Shell study shows that the share of European drivers planning to purchase an electric vehicle has dropped from 48% in 2024 to 41% currently. The main barriers are the high prices of EVs and the unsatisfactory charging infrastructure.

According to a large-scale study conducted by Shell among 15,000 drivers in Europe, the US, China, and the UK, interest in electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe has decreased significantly. Only 41% of European drivers say they plan to purchase an EV, compared to 48% in 2024.

The main reasons for this decline are the high prices of EVs, which are still up to 30% more expensive than internal combustion engine vehicles, as well as dissatisfaction with the available public charging infrastructure. Only 17% of European drivers believe it is adequate, while in the US this share reaches 71%.

Shell warns that without significant investment in the charging network, forecasts for mass transition to electric vehicles remain questionable. This puts significant pressure on regulators, manufacturers, and energy providers to accelerate the development of the necessary infrastructure.
