Official statistical data reveal a dramatic increase in counterfeit banknotes in Bulgaria during the second quarter of the year. Financial experts note an alarming trend that requires immediate heightened vigilance among citizens and commercial entities.
According to recent studies, the number of fake monetary funds has increased more than twenty times compared to the previous period. Counterfeits of 50-lev and 100-lev banknotes are the most widespread, reaching an impressive 661 units in just three months.
Max Baklayan, a leading financial expert, revealed the critical mechanisms for identifying fraudulent banknotes. According to him, there are three main indicators of authenticity: relief, watermark, and hologram strip. The professional emphasized that machine verification is not sufficient and recommended mandatory double-checking.
The expert explained that the increased currency exchange over the past year naturally attracts the attention of criminal groups. "Fraudsters deliberately target the most common denominations, where people's attention is more distracted," Baklayan commented.
Key indicators for recognizing counterfeit banknotes include:
• Lack of relief when touched
• Unclear or drawn watermark
• Unnatural behavior of the hologram strip
Financial analysts warn that the greatest risk exists during mass monetary transactions. Merchants must apply thorough checks, especially for 50 and 100 lev banknotes.
Statistics show that out of 1247 detected counterfeit banknotes, 531 are 50-lev, 661 are 100-lev, 43 are 20-lev, and only 9 are 10-lev. This imbalance underscores the intentionality of criminal groups.
Expert Baklayan concluded: "Vigilance remains the most effective weapon against financial fraud. Every citizen can and should be an active participant in countering such crimes".
The investigation continues, with financial institutions strengthening control and introducing additional preventive measures to protect the monetary system.
