The Bulgarian Basketball Federation announced a significant change in the national team leadership, appointing Dimitar Dimitrov as the new captain of the men's team. The 203-centimeter tall player will take on this responsibility at a crucial moment in the team's preparation.
Head coach Rosen Barchovski confirmed the choice, emphasizing that Dimitrov is the most suitable candidate due to his accumulated experience. Jordan Minchev will serve as the assistant captain, supporting the team's main leader.
The new captain has a rich history with the national team – he has been an integral part of the squad for the past 11 years. His career includes participation in numerous international tournaments, including qualifications for EuroBasket 2015 and the European Championship in 2022.
The most significant achievement of the 32-year-old basketball player remains his participation in the European Championship three years ago. Prior to that, Dimitrov represented Bulgaria in the World Championship qualifications in 2019 and 2023 in China, Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Dimitrov's official debut as captain will be on August 6 (Wednesday) in the match against Austria in the second round of qualifications. The match will be held in Schwechat at 8:20 PM Bulgarian time and will be broadcast live on bTV Action.
Before him, the captain's armband was entrusted to Pavlin Ivanov, who received a break during the current season. Dimitrov, who was part of the Spanish team Palencia last year, continues the tradition of strong performances by Bulgarian basketball players in international competitions.
