Revolution in the pharmacy system: 98% fewer errors with e-prescriptions
Digitalization in Bulgarian healthcare has achieved impressive results. Thanks to the introduction of the automated electronic prescription reporting system, errors in dispensing medicines financed by the NHIF have decreased by over 98%. This was stated by Georgi Nedev from "Information Services" during the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Days 2026.
Before digitalization, experts reported an average of over 22,000 errors per month. Today, they have been reduced to under 2%, which is a huge success for the system.
Benefits for pharmacies and patients
- Elimination of administrative burden: The real-time control system removes the risk of financial penalties for pharmacies due to technical errors.
- Time saved: Incorrect prescriptions are corrected at the time of issuance, which prevents the need for patients to return to the doctor multiple times.
- Scale: Currently, over 2,400 pharmacies are working with the new system, processing over 3.4 million medication dispensations per month.
Despite the progress, the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union (BPU) is insisting on a new standalone law for pharmacies to further regulate the processes for dispensing all prescription medications.
